Summary- About 40,000 civilians died by a gun last year, that’s was the highest number in decades. The data came from Centers for disease and prevention WONDER’S database. CNN Recreated the analysis and found that 39,773 people died by guns in 2017. That was an increase of more than 10,000 deaths in 1999, also CNN did another analysis showing that only 23,854 people died from suicide by guns in 2017, the highest number in 18 years. while in 1999 there were only 16,599 suicide deaths, That’s a difference of more than 7,000 deaths comparison
In 2017, the age-adjusted rate of suicide deaths by firearm was highest among white men at 14 per 100,000 — Compared with:
- 2.2 among white women
- 6.1 among black men
- 0.7 among black women
- 3.0 among Asian men
- 0.5 among Asian women
- 9.3 among American Indian or Alaska Native men
Significance- Gun violence is a leading cause of premature death in the U.S. Guns kill more than 38,000 people and cause nearly 85,000 injuries each year
